Greyhounds, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) of LPA had their first meeting on September 20th in the cafeteria with Mr. Marchant as its coordinator. 100 out of the 134 members went to the meeting to learn how NJHS works and what are the main attributes that truly make a member of NJHS.
The traits that make the members part of NJHS are called the Five Pillars of NJHS. They include scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Each pillar has its own different meaning, which are:
Scholarship: An unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher; Teacher’s recommendations.
Service: Volunteering and making contributions in the community.
Leadership: Learning from school and community activities to be resourceful, a problem-solver, and an idea contributor.
Character: Cooperative, honest, well-behaved, and courteous.
Citizenship: Respects all U.S. based laws and government, understands the importance of civic engagement, and shows mature and responsible actions during activities.
To be invited into NJHS, you must be in 7th through 9th grade, and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and no behavior problems to be guaranteed an invitation from Mr. Marchant or have a teacher’s recommendation into the honor society. So, keep those grades up Greyhounds, as getting into NJHS is a much higher achievement than getting honor roll.
During the meeting, the members of NJHS were tasked with obtaining donated non-perishable canned food from around the community to help feed students at LPA who are not able to eat after school. They also were specifically told not to buy canned food as this mission helps build their relationship with their neighbors and businesses and gives them experience in leadership. So, we hope for the best of luck for our members and be sure to help support them in any way Greyhounds!
