Barbie: The Review

The Barbie Movie has made a splash, not only in the box office, but also on the internet, with many popular trends and songs to come from it. Let’s take a deep dive into the messages and themes of the story and dissect the soundtrack.

MAJOR SPOILER WARNING FOR EVENTS OF THE BARBIE MOVIE!

Summary: Barbie, the most popular of all the Barbies in Barbieland, begins experiencing an existential crisis. Aided by other characters, she must travel to the human world to understand herself and discover her true purpose. Her admirer/kind-of boyfriend, Ken, comes along for the ride because he feels his existence depends on Barbie acknowledging him. Both discover harsh truths—and make new friends –along the road to enlightenment, while they discover who they are as people. After an initial viewing of the movie some major points and themes really stick out:

  • Individuality is an important aspect of oneself.

  • The effects of toxic masculinity and how it affects both men and women.

  • Being your own person in defiance of an overbearing person/presence

Soundtrack Rating: Overall, the album is solid, with my overall rating being 9.5/10. The most popular being “Dance The Night” by Dua Lipa. This is the main song during the dancing sequence. Another important song in the movie is “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish. The song plays during the ending scene where the Ghost of Ruth Handler tells Barbie to feel so she begins her life as a human being. Both songs, however, can become redundant after hearing them on the internet so many times, but they're still well-written and amazing – 9.5/10.
